―Could you please tell us more about your Hokkaido Smile Ambassador work?―Apart from communicating the charm of Hokkaido what else do you have in plan?4IHHIIThursday, August 17, 2017The Shinro Shimbun Hawaii EditionProfi leMs.Reiko Tokushige RogersCreated a radio company Studio RIM Hawaii, Inc, in Hawaii in 2000 and moved to Hawaii. As a “Hawaii Concierge” she is well-versed in Hawaii education, politics, tourism, nature, food, culture, arts and entertainment. As of now, Hawaii and Hokkaido have signed a new sister-state agreement in May 2017, meaning that the two states will share resources to create business, cultural and educational exchanges that will benefit both parties. In this issue we would like to introduce Ms. Reiko Tokushige, who has been working hard on communicating the charm of Hokkaido since having been appointed to the “Hokkaido Smile Ambassador”.t's been 17 years since I moved to Hawaii. I host a weekly radio show for listeners in Japan, which they can listen to on the radio, internet and various mobile applications. I'm also involved in the in-flight broadcast of Hawaiian Airlines as well as the production of the in-flight magazine “Eheu” which is available on all Japanese Airlines flights between Japan and Hawaii.Besides hosting radio shows and editing I also am in charge of a Hawaii promotion project. For example, I took on a role of a Local Coordinator in collaboration with Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism for the Hankyu Department Store (Osaka) Hawaii Fair to promote Hawaii. And ever since having been appointed as the Hokkaido Smile Ambassador in January 2017, I've been working towards promoting Hawaii in Hokkaido.Ms. Reiko actively provides consulting and marketing services for companies, constantly expanding her network of human connections.Appointed the Hokkaido Smile Ambassador in January 2017. Working okkaido and Hawaii have signed a sister-state agreement on May 8 this year. I've been a host of the “Island Breeze from Hawaii” radio show targeted at my listeners in Hokkaido for 17 years, long before I became the Hokkaido Smile Ambassador. You could listen to it on “FM NORTH WAVE” in Hokkaido. But now you can listen to it on the internet and a number of mobile applications, so you don't have to live in Hokkaido to listen to my shows. Thanks to that, my audience has increased. And I was appointed to the Hokkaido Smile Ambassador in recognition of my work.proactively on bringing together Hokkaido and Hawaii. So right now I work as a journalist, mostly taking interviews in order to convey the charm of Hokkaido and Hawaii. For example, I gather information about what kind of lives Hokkaido natives currently residing in Hawaii lead, latest news about entrepreneurs, tourists, and couples that hold wedding ceremonies here, and deliver it both to Hokkaido and Hawaii.I also participate in “Hokkaido Charm Communication Seminar” where I have given lectures and held seminars on Hokkaido's charm.okkaido has four seasons that you can't really feel in Hawaii. Food is truly delicious, and I believe that the hospitality of locals is also one of Hokkaido's selling points.Hokkaido and Hawaii history are intertwined. It will be 150 years since the signing of the Convention of Japanese Immigration next year. Just like the Japanese people immigrated to Hawaii, a vast majority of those who moved to Hokkaido came from Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, and Fukuoka prefectures. The region where people from Hiroshima used to live is called “Kitahiroshima-shi” (North Hiroshima) now. Even though the Japanese who moved to Hokkaido retained their citizenship and those who moved to Hawaii became American citizens, that part of their history is similar.Furthermore, the Japanese that come to Hawaii feel that it's similar to Japan in a way which cannot be said about San Francisco and New York. As for Hokkaido, I think that it also has a similar environment that makes foreigners feel at ease. Moreover, Hokkaido has remarkably delicious food and is an excellent place for sightseeing. So I try to use this image to communicate its charm.was told that it would be wonderful if more high school students and young people in general would come to Hokkaido to study, when I became the Hokkaido Smile Ambassador. So that's the reason why I would like to support “Japan RYUGAKU Fair”.I'm a firm believer that our childhood and adolescence memories are very precious. A lot of people retain their positive childhood memories of Hawaii and come here to hold wedding ceremonies when they become adults, and I would love it if Hokkaido became that kind f you like Japan and want to learn Japanese, I strongly encourage you to come to Japan instead of studying on your own. In Japan you would learn not only the language but also local culture and customs, and would experience local lifestyle firsthand, which, in return, would make for a great life experience.Additionally, if you have roots in Japan, then you could try and deepen your understanding of the culture while studying. I think that's very important. You won't be able to truly learn a language unless you visit that country because only then you would be able Ms. Reiko Tokushige Rogersof place as well. I want Hawaii locals to learn about Hokkaido, so I try to convey what a charming place it is so that they'd want to travel to Hokkaido to study Japanese. Moreover, I think it would be great if Hokkaido locals would be interested in visiting Hawaii after meeting with the tourists from Hawaii.to understand the peculiarities of word usage and how they intertwine with culture. You should definitely consider this kind of experience if your future job will involve communication with the Japanese. Building a network in Japan would become a big asset.Studying abroad involves not only studying the language but also learning about the culture, interacting with locals, therefore, gaining a much deeper understanding of the Japanese language, and that would become a rather valuable experience. I'm sure it will be useful for future business ventures and life in general. I can guarantee that.Fascinating nature and delicious food, why don't you visit Hokkaido?
