After graduating from the University of Hawaii, she got a job at a wedding photo and video company in Hawaii and has helped many Japanese couples have memorable wedding ceremonies, with her English and Japanese ability. We asked Ms. Iijima about her life and to leave a message for the young people in Hawaii who are thinking about studying in Japan.―Ms. Iijima, can you tell us about your life up until now?was born on the island of Maui on May 5, 1994, from Japanese parents. My father was a professional windsurfer based in Hawaii, so I was born on the island of Maui. However, when I was around 6 months, my family and I moved to Guam and stayed until my first years of elementary school. After that, we moved to Japan so my father could get medical treatment and I transferred to an elementary school in Hachioji, Tokyo. Because I spent most of my childhood in Guam, I could only speak a little Japanese, and I also had difficulty learning kanji. But I have been blessed with friends and am still connected to my classmates from that time via social media etc. and kept in touch with them regularly. After living in Japan for about a year, we decided to return to Hawaii. During junior high school and high school, I joined the brass band club and did my best practicing the trumpet. Roosevelt High School, the school that I went to, had exchanges with Kindai University High School in Osaka Prefecture of Japan, so I had the opportunity to play in Japan. The length of stay at the time was around two weeks. After the 1-week exchange, we had another week left to visit Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, and Tokyo. I was able to visit a lot of the major sightseeing spots in Japan and I remember having a lot of fun. fter graduating from high school, I went to the University of Hawaii. At fi rst, I thought about majoring in nursing studies to become a nurse. But since I lived in Japan for about a year, and since I was also addicted to Japanese animation and TV drama when I was a junior high school student, I decided to major in Japanese language studies.―What memories of your college days stand out the most?didn't want to put a strain on my parents on my tuition fees, so I was working hard on my part-time job. At first, I worked to sell sunglasses as a shop clerk. Then, I became a tour guide and led Japanese tourists on a Segway tour around Waikiki Beach. There were many opportunities to use Japanese, so I learned practical Japanese thanks to that job. ―So you started working for your current job at the wedding photo and video company after that?hat's right. My acquaintance who was working as a photographer at the company told me that the company was looking for a bilingual staff who can speak both Japanese and English. In that sense, I was able to get a job with little job hunting. I was really happy to be able to speak both Japanese and English. ―Please tell us the specifi c details of your work.mainly work with a bridal company in Japan to check the details of the wedding ceremony. ●Profi leKonatsu Iijima was born on May 5, 1994, on the island of Maui.
