Level A team from Moanalua High School (State of Hawaii, U.S.A) won the 3rd prize in their level of the competition. As a prize, the Level A team from Moanalua High School was able to travel to Japan. Mrs. Jaimelynn Tateyama, who is Japanese teacher at Moanalua High School escorted students on the tour. She has been trying to implement core practices and various instruction methods of Japanese language learning and education at her school. We interviewed her about her life, and asked her to also give a message to the young who are interested in studying in Japan.―Could you tell us about your background?hen I was 15 years old, I got a chance to make friends with a Japanese student from sister school of my high school. She introduced J-pop music to me and I got so impressed with these songs and wanted to know more about the meaning of lyrics. This is how I got interested in the Japanese and decided to study the Japanese language. When I was 16 years old, I participated a sister city exchange program with Moriyama Girl's High School (Currently known as Ritsumeikan Moriyama High School, located in Moriyama-city, Shiga pref.). The teacher in charge of the program was so kind that he would care about me anytime anywhere and always reached out to me. Thanks to this teacher, I gradually got interested in both Japanese and Education and wanted to major in the both fields. After returning to Hawaii, I entered University of Hawaii at Manoa (State of Hawaii, U.S.A) and majored in Japanese and Secondary Education. While studying in Hawaii, I started to What kind of country is Japan?Moanalua High School Students and Ms. Jaimelynn Tateyama visited Yu Language Academy (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) on June 25miss my life in Japan, so I decided to apply to study abroad at Sophia University (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and got accepted into the program. I studied for a year in 2001. After studying abroad and graduating from University of Hawaii at Manoa, I wanted to study in Japan again and also have the opportunity to work there, so I applied for “JET program”, and I was assigned to Fukushima Yumoto High School (Iwaki-city, Fukushima pref.) and I worked in the English course of the high school as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) for 3 years. After finishing JET program, I entered graduate school of University of Hawaii at Manoa, and I earned master's degree in Japanese Linguistics and Pedagogy. After graduating from graduate school, I worked as a Japanese teacher at some public schools in Hawaii. Since 2015, I work in Moanalua High School and teach Japanese and other subjects since 2015.―Please tell us about your job.'m in charge of the World Language Learning Center at Moanalua High School. I coordinate programs within the languages we offer at our school. For example, Hawaiian language, Korean, other languages and of course Japanese. It would be great if students kept learning language through the World Language Learning Center and gain a lot of skills so that they can communicate with others in the language they learn. I really hope to make as many students of mine as possible like Japanese language, and make them know that learning language is interesting. From my experience, I stumble across a lot of opportunities because I put value on communication with others. So I want my students to know about the importance of communication.―Please tell us about this Japan trip.his trip was a prize of “Japan Wizards Competition” held on February 23 arranged by the non-profit organization, Japan America Society of Hawaii (JASH). At the “Japan Wizards Competition”, teams of 3 students from different schools all around Hawaii compete on knowledge of several topics relating Japan. For the 3rd place prize, the Moanalua High School Level A team gained the chance to the go to Japan. We stayed in Japan from June 22nd to 28th. The first place of the tour was Sapporo-city, and we visited some schools in Sapporo. At the school of Sapporo, we enjoyed cultural exchange with students. After the trip around Sapporo, we moved to Tokyo and visited Tokai University (Kanagawa Prefecture). At Tokai University, students provided a small seminar about Hawaii. There were several choices for this trip. We could have gone to other places, however, I prioritized to make as many opportunities to communicate with people in Japan as possible rather than enjoy shopping and sightseeing. All of this is so my students can realize how great Japan is not only through the different attractions but also through the interactions with the people there as well. I really hope my students find something special through this trip so that they will gain more interest and passion in the Japanese language and culture. ―What do you think is difficult when you learn Japanese? And how did you overcome?ince I studied abroad to Japan when I was 16 years old, I think I could easily gain listening skill. However, reading and writing skills were very hard to gain. What I did during my study abroad was, to gain reading skill, reading several kinds of sentences every day. It is important to read many sentences you are interested in not only from manga, but also from newspaper, TV news, sightseeing brochure and so on. In terms of writing skill, I think it is effective to communicate with Japanese through SNS application like LINE. By communicating through SNS, you can understand real conversation and learn a lot of kanji by using them. And if you have question, you can easily ask friends and get more and more knowledge of Japanese. Moreover, the knowledge gained from communicating through SNS leads you to brush up on your speaking and listening skills. So, you can build up your Japanese skills comprehensively.―Please give message to the readers who learn Japanese.hen you study abroad to Japan, you need to put much effort. But it is not so difficult. In order to study abroad to Japan, collect information first. And Never give up learning Japanese and building up your Japanese skills. For example, listen to Japanese conversation every day. Most of you like to read manga. For reading manga, not only if you just read, but also if you try to understand how the expression is used in the whole context, you can learn a lot of Japanese language expression methods. As you know it is not easy to learn Japanese, but seeking what you think interesting to study Japanese, I'm sure you finally get a chance to study abroad to Japan.vol.6Schools in HokkaidoSpecial InterviewMs. Jaimelynn TateyamaALL THE NEWS & TOPICS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS進路新聞Make small and continual efforts to get a chance to study abroad in JapanHawaii EditionThe Shinro Shimbun
