She will be studying in Japan from April 2022 to study Japanese at Canaan International Education Academy. We asked Ms. Mealani about what she expected from studying abroad. She added her Japanese skills to the Global Business she studied at university, and wants to work in Japan in the future.―What made you interested in Japan?was born in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, but was adopted and raised by my current parents on Maui. I became interested in Japanese when I was in the second grade of elementary school. At the “Honganji Mission” I used to go to, I had three hours a week to study Japanese. I think there was also the influence of having more Japanese descendants around me.continued to learn Japanese and in my senior year of high school, I participated in a three-week program at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Japan. The fact that I was able to experience Japanese learning made my desire to learn Japanese culture stronger.— Was that your first time in Japan?had been to Japan several times before that. I had visited my relatives in Tokyo, but that was the fi rst time I had spent three weeks in Japan.hat surprised me was that the atmosphere of each place in Japan is completely different. For example, there are many shrines and temples in Kyoto, and Tokyo is full of an urban atmosphere. The area I was homestaying in while I was attending APU was not so developed, but the atmosphere, people and their minds were different, and I was impressed by the different atmosphere, people and minds.— How did you study Japanese?hen I was an elementary school student, most of the learning style was learning letters with games, so we could learn it in a fun way. I would sometimes learn words while singing Japanese children's songs. I could learn Hiragana and Katakana, but once I started studying Kanji, it became very difficult.— What did you major in college?— We heard that you will majored in Global Business and Marketing at Seattle University in Washington, USA.
