This research project is to define the essence of “Cool Japan” from the foreigners' point of view. The target of this research project is those who like Japan and those who are interested in Japan from 3 continental areas: Europe, Asia, and North America. The report says there are 420 valid responses.he first question is “What makes you interested in Japan?” Please note this question is a multiple-choice (up to 3 answers) question and the result includes all answers. Among participants from Europe, 75.0% of them answered “Anime, manga, and game.” 27.0% answered “J-POP music,” and 24.0% answered “Japanese cuisine.” Among participants from North America, 27.8% answered “Japanese cuisine,” 23.2% answered “Anime, manga, and game” and “Sightseeing.” The result shows 56.6% of participants from Asia answered “Anime, manga, and game,” 28.3% of them answered “J-POP music,” and 25.0% of them answered “Sightseeing.” Significantly, most of the participants from all 3 continental areas answered “Anime, manga, and game.”he second question is “What is the most characteristic point of Japanese?” This question is also a multiple-choice question up to 5 answers. 61.0% of European participants answered “Politeness.” 40.0% of them answered “Trustfulness” and “KAWAII culture (anime character and fashion).” As of North American participants, 49.1% answered “Politeness,” 44.4% “Attitude towards seeking perfection,” and 37.0% “Trustfulness.” In terms of Asian participants, 53.8% answered “Politeness,” 50.9% “Trustfulness,” and 47.6% “KAWAII culture.” It can be said “Politeness” and “Trustfulness” are foreigners' common images of characteristics of Japanese people.
